Meditation for Gut Issues?

Sheila Stephens

Meditation is often associated with relaxation and stress relief, but did you know that it could also help with constipation? An often overlooked common cause of constipation is “not heeding the call” or “ignoring the urge”. This can occur for several reasons but often it is often due to jumping headfirst into the day and switching on the sympathetic nervous system. Studies have found that meditation can increase parasympathetic nervous system activity, which is responsible for rest and relaxation. This can stimulate digestion and can help with constipation.

This may sound surprising, but research has shown that the gut and the brain are connected through a communication pathway known as the gut-brain axis. When we experience stress or anxiety, it can affect our digestion and cause issues like constipation. By practicing meditation regularly, we can reduce stress and promote relaxation, therefore improving our gut health and bowel movements.

Many people who suffer from chronic constipation often feel frustrated with traditional treatments like fiber and medication. If you have seen your healthcare provider for your constipation, followed their advice, and still find yourself struggling with constipation, then relaxation and mindfulness techniques such as meditation might be something to consider.
